Coventry was incorporated in 1741 by about 100 farming families. Nathanael Greene, George Washington's second-in-command, built his family homestead here in 1770. It still stands today as a National Historic Landmark. A textile mill built on the Pawtuxet River in the early 1800s became the largest mill in the state by 1810.
