Waterford is home to Harkness Memorial State Park. It was once the summer estate of wealthy owners Edward and Mary Harkness. Their family fortune came from an early investment in Standard Oil. Built in 1906, the 42-room mansion sits on grounds later redesigned by a founder of American landscape architecture. After Mary Harkness died in 1950, the estate became a public park in 1952.
The mansion and its formal gardens now hold National Register status. They still overlook Long Island Sound today.
